Cortez Masto Meets with Latino Students, Faculty, and Staff at Truckee Meadow Community College

Reno, Nevada. — U.S. Sen. Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today hosted a roundtable for Latino students, faculty, and staff at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) to discuss her work to support students and Nevada families. The senator also shared how her experiences as the first Latina elected to the Senate informed and inspired her work in Congress.
“As one of the first people in my family to graduate from college, I understand how important it is for students to have the doors of opportunity open to them,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “And as the first Latina elected to the Senate, I’m doing everything I can to keep those doors open behind me and make sure Nevada’s Latino community has the support it needs to succeed. I have worked hard at the federal level to ensure that interested Silver State students can pursue college education and find rewarding careers upon graduation, and I will continue to support Nevada students in every way. possible.
Senator Cortez Masto has been an advocate for Nevada students throughout her tenure in the Senate. She introduced legislation to reform the Pell Scholarship and the federal student loan system so that more Nevadans can access higher education without taking on heavy debt. She regularly supports federal funding for minority-serving institutions, including Nevada’s four Hispanic-serving institutions. She is also a lead co-sponsor, along with Sen. Alex Padilla (D-California), of the Hispanic Education Resources and Empowerment Act to fund partnerships to increase enrollment in higher education institutions serving Hispanics. in districts with large Latin American populations.
