‘David Makes Man’ recap: season 2, episode 2 on OWN – ‘Hurston’
David made the man fans who missed out on the younger version of the main character in the Season 2 premiere only had to wait a week for the narrative to focus on him again.
In Tuesday’s episode, titled “Hurston”, we got to see what life is like for young David in sophomore year at Hurston Prep. This is the very school the teenager fought so hard to enter as a college graduate. Now that he’s here, he’s made a group of friends (and that includes his roommate Luis) who seem to support him, but turn out too privileged and short-sighted to identify with.
Trouble begins when David’s calculator breaks down and Luis loans him an old one. The lender dies on a major geometry exam, and David is unable to solve all the problems and ends up getting a fail grade. On the one hand, you could say that Luis helped him the best he could. But on the other hand, Luis is competitive and seems to be delighted with David’s inability to seize the opportunity for once.
Later, Luis and the other guys decide to do a class prank, and David helps them perform it perfectly. But David also notices that one of the boys, Rondo, is pulling out some beer to celebrate, and he doesn’t feel comfortable participating. Rondo’s addiction to alcohol resurfaces when he walks around drunk during breakfast and fights with David, which ends in Rondo’s wrist slap and a week’s suspension from school by David. And the fight only intensifies because Rondo, who is Latino, continues to use the N word.
When David returns home to wait for his suspension to end, he learns the hard way that life has evolved without him. Not only has her mother Gloria become sober and sober, but she takes classes and takes in temperamental children. JG is also more mature and turns to David for advice regarding his new teenager, uh, tumescence. While David loves that he can help, he also can’t help but notice that his mother and younger brother don’t need him as much. On the contrary, it is as if David, an aspiring Shakespearean, is more alone than ever because he does not fit in anywhere.
Hoping to get words of wisdom from his favorite college professor and mentor, Dr. Woods-Trap, David sends him an email and is slightly heartbroken when she tells him he needs to control his anger. This is especially important, she reasoned, as he navigates white spaces where systemic racism is woven into the school culture and will only work against it. She also warns that her friends in Hurston will either abandon her or smile in her face and stab him in the back.
Dr Woods-Trap’s words unfortunately come to fruition when Luis betrays him not once but twice. First, he doesn’t defend David against his racist Cuban father, and then when Rondo questions their heterosexuality, Luis turns on David and laughs at him because he doesn’t have a father. He even accuses David of looking for a present, even though they are both dating Hurston on a scholarship. Wow. Will David make true friends like Seren again?
