Democrats unveil ‘Dark Brandon’ student loan ad ahead of midterms: ‘Cringe’
A Democratic political group has unveiled a new ad aimed at pumping up young voters by highlighting President Biden’s student debt forgiveness program, but the public doesn’t care.
The group, Build Back Together, is using the ad in a “six figure” campaign. It kicks off with a clip of MSNBC host Shepard Smith saying the White House is “launching efforts to write off student loan debt.” The screen then seems to have a glitch, with Smith repeating the word “debt” over and over before a beat kicks in and memes start spilling across the stage.
“NEW ANNOUNCEMENT: Darth Brandon strikes again!” read a tweet from the organization announcing the announcement.
“Biden just delivered historic student debt relief, putting [bag of cash emoji] into the pockets of borrowers across the country and completely wiping out student debt for one in four black borrowers and nearly half of Latino borrowers,” the group wrote.

The clip shows Biden with laser beam eyes before flashing “StudentAid.Gov” across the screen.
“Millions of Americans earning less than $125,000 a year will be able to get much-needed help through this simple online form, which takes less than five minutes to complete,” Building Back Together executive director Danielle Melfi said. in a press release.
“This is a game-changer for so many young Americans, who will now have more money in their pockets to start a family, open a business or buy a home. This campaign celebrates this victory for working families and thanks the President for his commitment to do so,” she added.
However, netizens were quick to mock the 30-second clip.
Journalist Dave Weigel said of the announcement, “Feel the cringe, let it overwhelm you.”
“I’ll take granny ads rapping baby boomers about anything,” Town Hall’s Kevin McMahon wrote.
“[That face when] your consultants’ brains have marinated on the internet so long they don’t even know who they’re talking to,” political commentator Liam Donovan wrote.

The ad is another attempt by Democrats to reframe Biden as “Dark Brandon” in early August. The name was a play on the “Let’s Go Brandon” trend poking fun at the president.
Members of Biden’s own administration shared footage of him with red laser beams shooting out of his eyes to make it look like the president is “pissed off.”
